Avoiding Excessive or Uneven Front Tire Wear

Avoiding Excessive or Uneven Front Tire Wear

category : Automotive:Motorcycles

All rubber tires wear down over time, whether they're on a motorcycle or automobile. However, you want to watch out for uneven or excessive wear, both of which can cause serious problems for motorcycle riders. If you pay attention to the following causes of excessive and uneven wear, you will extend the life of your tires and keep yourself safe:

1. Improper Tire Pressure - We have all heard about the importance of maintaining proper tire pressure at all times. Improper air pressure in your tire is a big reason for many tire problems and failures. Be sure your tires have the recommended pressure in them at all times.

2. Humped Roads -- Most roads are "humped" slightly in the middle or banked away from the center to allow rain and water to drain off. However, this hump can have a dramatic effect on one side of your motorcycle's front tire because the side of the tire closer to the center of the road will wear faster. There's not much you can do about this, and it can become very visible if you ride a lot. So be aware of this phenomenon and check the left side of your front tire often.

3. Disproportionate Cupping -- Cupping is a normal phenomenon on rubber tires that occurs when the brakes are applied. However, excessive use of the front brake can produce disproportionate cupping, when one side of the tire is more cupped than the other. Using the front brake will naturally put more pressure and force on the front tire to make it stop, thereby using up more rubber.

4. Wheel Alignment - While this problem is not as common on motorcycles as it is on cars, it causes uneven tire wear. Any number of things can cause wheel misalignment on motorcycles, including getting into a fender bender, riding over potholes, jumping over sidewalks and curbs, etc. It is a good idea to have your wheel alignment checked out at least once a year to make sure that a misalignment isn't unevenly wearing your front tire.

5. Shock Absorbers -- A bad shock absorber can wreak havoc on the handling of your bike and promotes uneven front tire wear. So make sure your shocks are in good shape.

6. Improper Loading -- The final major problem to keep in mind is improper loading of your bike, which causes your front tire to wear unevenly. Proper weight distribution is essential to being able to handle and steer your bike safely. Loading down one side of your saddlebag with tools or equipment can keep you from riding as vertically as possible, creating uneven tire wear.

So check your tires frequently, and keep these causes in mind if you begin noticing excessive or uneven front tire wear. Having the knowledge and taking the proper precautions will not only make you a safer rider but will prolong the life of your bike's tires.

Two Stroke Vs Four Stroke Engines in Scooters

category : Automotive:Motorcycles

More and more scooters are coming equipped with four stroke engines due to their dependalablity and ease of care. While most scooters were two stroke up until 2004 most manufacturers are producing four stroke models due to the disadvantages of a two stroke engine. Without getting too deep in into how two stroke engines work we will just look at the disadvantages of two stroke motors in that they do not use fuel efficiently, so you would get fewer miles per gallon, produce a lot of pollution -- so much, in fact, that it is likely that you won't see them around too much longer. Two-stroke engines don't last nearly as long as four-stroke engines. The lack of a dedicated lubrication system means that the parts of a two-stroke engine wear a lot faster.

So you see the newer four stroke models that are coming out of which there are plenty of models to choose from offering both 49.5cc and 150cc. A four stroke model is a more reliable scooter to operate getting better gas mileage and ease of care. Other huge advantage four stroke scooters have over two stroke models is storage, a two stroke model stored over long periods of time like the colder winter months will form a varnish type film over the carburetor jets clogging them with oil and making start virtually impossible with cleaning carburetor which means removing from the scooter. Keeping the oil changed in a four stroke motor is easy and can be done in about fifteen minutes, not much time compared to keeping the two stroke oil plentiful plus a clean spark plug and a finely tunes carb on a two stroke model. Consider the advantages of a four stroke over the two stroke before buying.

Safe and Secure Motorcycle Shipping

category : Automotive:Motorcycles

Motorcycles have become a major part of American culture, especially in recent years with the re-emergence of Harley Davidson and similar high quality bike manufacturers. In fact, many enthusiasts have more than one motorcycle at home to be used depending on what kind of riding they wish to do. Of course, when it comes time to move, or for some other reason the bike must be transported a long distance, this will often involve a motorcycle shipping company.

So what can you expect from motorcycle shipping? Actually, there are plenty of good, solid, reputable companies that focus exclusively on shipping motorcycles. There are also plenty of car shippers too, but a motorcycle is not a car and it is often a good decision to use a shipping company that deals only with transporting motorcycles to get the best results.

You may wonder why motorcycles would be so much different to ship than cars, but think about the fact that cars have four tires that keep it upright at all times without any need for support. So they are easily locked down and secured in transit. A motorcycle on the other hand has only two wheels and is top heavy, meaning that without the proper support it will easily fall on it's side, often causing damage.

Motorcycle shippers understand the unique requirements of shipping bikes, and they usually have equipment that helps lock a bike into position and keep it stationary no matter what rough roads may be encountered on the trip. That kind of peace of mind is great to have when entrusting your prized motorcycle to someone else on a long road trip.

Very often motorcycles are shipped in enclosed trailers too, as this not only protects them from outside debris but also keeps them safe from prying eyes who may be interested in stealing the bike while it is in transit. If your motorcycle is valuable or just a favorite possession, you may want to consider using an enclosed trailer for transport for the added safety and protection that it can afford. It will usually cost more, but it is also usually worth it.

So enlisting the services of a reputable motorcycle shipper that will take special care of your bike(s) will be a good, solid investment and will make for safe and secure motorcycle shipping.

What Is a Nerf Bar?

category : Automotive:Trucks

A nerf bar is one that is going to add to the classic look of a truck, any truck that has an open bed. A nerf bar is going to be made of plastic, metal, of rubber, and can include the color of any you may like. A nerf bar is one that is going to be up the sides of the back of the bed of the truck, and the bar will come across the top of the cab. If you have ever seen people in the back of a truck, holding on while the truck is speeding down the dirt road, that is a nerf bar, but most nerf bars are for display and not for holding on really!

A nerf bar is also going to be the bar that is on the side of the truck that you step up on to get in the truck. Not only are nerf bars included on trucks, but you will also find them on blazers, on explorers and all types of SUVs that are a little taller than the average car. A truck or SUV with a nerf bar on the side to get up and into the truck is going to be made of some type of heavy metal, often times they are round, or they can be flat, but if looks like a long bar along the side of the SUV or truck.

Nerf bars are also the types of bars that are connected to the truck on the front or rear of the vehicle. A nerf bar is going to make the truck or SUV look tough, feel as if you are driving something that is invinsible, and at the same time it is going to add that flair to the truck or SUV that no other is going to have. The nerf bars on the back or on the front of a truck are for show only; they are not going to do the same protective things that a bumper will provide for the vehicle. A nerf bar on the front of on the back of the vehicle can be made from metal, plastic or it can be made of a combination.

The nerf bar on the back, the front, up in the bed of a truck or along side the truck are all going to be paintable. Most all are made of a material that are paintable so that they will match the vehicle that you are driving. The only ones that are not paintable will be the chrome type of nerf bars that will be added to the vehicle. The chrome types of nerf bars are meant to be shiny and clean, and will not hold paint well at all. Aluminum, plastic, and even the metal nerf bars can be painted, and they will then match the rest of the vehicle.
